October 28, 2009 Here are the submissions for Friday Night's Best Volume 5. With playoff games starting soon and and tournament seeding falling in place we are really stoked to see all these great kids doing such amazing things! What a great representation of the level of talent that we have here in Oregon! Way to go guys. Keep the Hits, and the big plays coming! Here are Submissions for Volume 5: Taylor Walcott; Marist: This young man made two outstanding receptions against Sisters last Friday. On one catch, he laid out in full body extension and caught a ball that was overthrown. On the other catch,he was in tight man coverage and went up and over the defender for a long reception. I think this kid has great potential. Matt Beaty; Marist: Matt is a DB. He had two interceptions, one which he returned 75 yards for a TD. He also blocked a punt, and then recovered the blocked punt in the end zone for another defensive TD. He also made several tackles and another fumble recovery. Michael Balfour; Sherwood Bowmen: Michael Balfour helped set the tone in Sherwood's 62-6 whitewash of Glencoe. On Sherwood's first offensive possession Friday the Bowmen drove 61 yards on 4 plays. Balfour carried the ball on all 4 plays and scored from 5 yards out to start Sherwood rolling. Officially, Balfour had 9 carries for 202 yards and 3 TD's on runs of 5, 33, and 75 yards. All of this was done in the first half where Sherwood built a 48-6 lead at halftime. Balfour never got another touch with one quick series in the 2nd half before he sat for the rest of the night. Jordan Johnson; Sheldon High School: Johnson was 14 of 16 passing for 238 yards and 4 touchdowns, while also running 8 times for 109 yards and two more touchdowns. Outside of one six-yard pass, all of his numbers came in the first half against North Medford. Johnson also had an interception on defense from his corner back position. On the season, Johnson now has 26 touchdown passes against 1 interception, and has rushed for an additional 8 touchdowns. Derrick Elford; Glencoe: Derrick Elford's play on both sides of the ball. He had 2 catches for 129 yards and the Tide's only touchdown, as well as what must have been 8 or 9 tackles on defense. Several of these tackles were from the safety position on the opposite side of the field and involved chasing down two of Oregon's fastest backs in Steven Long and Michael Balfour to save a touchdown. Amity Defense; Amity High School: Amity has pitched another shut out and teams should be recognized not just as individuals but also as a team Amity has the lowest points allowed in the 3A and that says it all! Jesuit O'Line; Jesuit High School: These players: Brock Nelson, Kaleb Koehne, Dominic Mori, Steven McGrain and Ryan McGrain, along with fullbacks Jack Nelson and Taylor Martinek opened the biggest holes I have seen all season, completely dominated the Beaverton defensive line, and are the reason their very talented backs were to run up a 53-0 final score. Nick Turner; Banks High School: did that makes them Friday Night's Best: Nick Turner rushed for 206 yards and 1 TD in leading #7 Banks to a 32 - 13 victory over #5 Scappoose in a Cowapa league showdown in 4A football. Nick's ability to run the ball and get tough yards made Scappoose keep 8 to 9 defenders in the box all night and allowed Banks receivers to get single coverage on the outside, which Banks was able to exploit late in the game. This was Nick's 4th 200 plus yard performance of the season. Nick Turner has rushed for 1,252 yards and 13 TD's in 7 games this season. Cole Naone; Lake Oswego: Tight End had 10 catches, 3 TD's, 2 PAT's. Josh Peck; Mazama High: He took a helmet to the knee in Eagle Point game, which took him out for the game. Then last Friday he played against Ashland and had 2 QB sacks, 2 blocked passes, approx, 14 tackles, and a caused fumble. With only 5 games played due to illness and injury he is currently ranked 21st on Maxpreps for tackles, and 6th for QB sacks. Nevin Blem; Woodburn High School: Nevin just transferred from Nevada. Ran for 222 yards, rushed for 3 TD's and threw for 34 yards and 1 TD and 1 2pt conversion. He lead Woodburn to there first league win in the Mid-Willamette Conference ever! 33 to 21 over Lebanon. Austin Wipf; Cascade Christian High: It was Homecoming night. Playing his left corner back position in the game of the year in the Sunset conference against Gold Beach, Wipf intercepted 3 QB passes. 2 were at the goal line and another near the 30. Dominic Wooten; Corvallis High School: The 6'1'' 205 Junior Running back for the Corvallis Spartans has rushed for more then a thousand yards in his last 5 games. With a total of 1,511 rushing yards in 8 games with two league games left, before playoffs. Wooten had 218 yards vs #2 team in state West Albany, despite the loss last week, hes looking to come off strong his junior season, with another year left hes sure to make some noise.(This week is a big week, going against rival CV) Note: Currently Getting looked at by U of O and University of Washington. James Baker; Weston-McEwen (soph): Ran for 91 yard and 1 TD in a 18-14 upset of Enterprise High School that ended Enterprises hopes of making it to state this year. Well there they are! Keep them coming folks. We appreciate your love of the game and your teams and will look back at years end and ponder all these great efforts with pride! Best of luck to all and have a safe Friday Night! |
