Parkrose QB wins Player Of The Week
In his Freshmen year at Parkrose High School in Portland Jonathan Boland started for the Broncos and was named Honorable Mention all league. His 7 picks and gutsy performance earned him a name as a play stopper in the passing lanes. Last season as a Sophomore he played some safety and a little Quarterback. Then the concussion bug bit and he missed 6 games and was not really able to finish the season very well. Jonathan Boland won the NWPR-Rvals Player of The Week by a narrow margin over RB Tyler Lunceford of Wilson High School.
Now in his Junior season Boland is back with a Vengeance and looking to make his mark. Coach Mo France is in his first year and trying to get the Broncos back in the winning way and has turned to Boland to fill the roll of Quarterback.
"Coach has me playing QB and I am enjoying it a lot," said Jonathan. "I know I am probably a better Safety but this is where I am playing and I am giving it my all."
Giving it his all led to 500 yards passing and 6 TD's through the Air last Friday Night in the big win over Franklin. To that massive total he put up 57 yards and a TD on the ground.
"They had some really tough Defensive Ends so I was forced to scramble all night. That worked out I guess because we made some big plays happen," said Boland who was an All League Basketball player on the Varsity and who plans to run Track this year too.
His success at the QB slot he attributes to 2 things. 1 is his ability to read secondaries because he was / is an accomplished cover man. Now in the QB position he looks up-field with a high IQ.
"I immediately know the coverage when I look up field. And I can relate what to do against man, Cover 2, Cover 3, or whatever. That I would say is my real strength as a QB."
The other thing he give the credit for his success is his work with his Coach and with Coach John Charles of Air One Football and his staff. A group he has worked with since 8th grade.
"I have been going to their camps for a few years and love it. Coach Charles teaches you what you need to know to succeed. He lived it and was an All American so that knowledge he teaches us. Then this year I was Coached by Connor Kavanaugh of Air One who I think is a lot like me. At Lincoln we used to watch him and he was a play maker too. I learned a lot from all of those guys."
Charles offered this,"The kid has the potential to be a super-star. If he continues to stay healthy and play to his potential eash week we'll be seeing him playing college football on saturday's."
Boland of course wants a shot at College and says he is hearing from EOU, UPS, and Utah. The kid has a 3.4 GPA and wants to play wherever he can help a team; saying he likes Safety 1st for sure. His 4.6 40 is not shabby for a young guy and he plans to get around to some camps in the off season.
Right now it is all about the team and getting some wins. "We have some terrific players and I think we can go far. We have to beat Wilsonville and are playing Jefferson this week. We are just going to earn everything we get," he concluded.
Jonathan Boland is the NWPR/Rivals.com Oregon Player of the week when our poll closed at Midnight last night. He barely beat out Tyler Lunceford of Wilson High School who had 287 yards rushing and 2 TD's. Lunceford has no overtaken Boland but our poll becomes final at Midnight of Wednesday every week. Others gaining major votes were Cameron Scarlett of CC, Jett Even of Tigard, Keegan Lawrence of Sherwood, and Chase Morrison of Jesuit. Congrats to all these great athletes!
