Records were made to be broken. Or so they say. And while Sisters High School Running Back Corey McCaffrey still holds the single season Rushing Record we know that may fall this week.
Thomas Tyner needs 95 yards to break that record. And considering he averages right at 330 yards per game it seems unlikely he will not.
Frankly it is window dressing. Something to brag about when he is older. Still the moment will not pass un-noticed. We expect a large crowd to be on hand Friday at Warrior Stadium to see if he can do it and no doubt there will be throngs of Media.
Thomas was held to about a 105 yards against Jesuit a few weeks back and there is not doubt that the #8 West Salem TItans are going to be one of the best defenses this #9 Warrior team has faced. But Tyner behind that massive and talented line will be looking to win the game for Aloha. The record will likely be a blip on the screen as he battles it out Friday.
Catch Jeff Smith's story from the Oregonian regarding Tyner and that line!
He needs the 95 yards to reach 3,336 yards which will eclipse McCaffrey's 3,335 set in 2006 in 14 games. Cory had 38 Touchdowns that season.
Tyner has played 10 games this year and has racked up 3,214 yards an 41 TD's.That means he is averaging 321 plus yards per game and 4.1 TD's. Just eye popping numbers.
Cory McCafrreyholds the All Time Records for Yardage as his career was productive all the way through at Sisters. Have a look at these numbers:
2005 – Sophomore Year- 12 Games 2,106 Yards
2006 – Junior Year 14 Games 3,335 Yards 38 TD's
2007- Senior Year 14 Games 2,917 Yards
All Time Rushing Leader with -8,415 Yards
Fittingly the Tyner's have reached out to McCafrey to ask him if he would honor them by joining them for the game.
“He is an amazing young man,” said John Tyner. “If all goes as planned he will be with us tomorrow night to see what happens. That will really be something.”
And John is right. McCaffrey shuns attention and was always a pretty quiet work horse like kid who just went about his business and handled it all. When he was knocked out of play last Fall at PSU he was leading the Nation in rushing at all levels and was thinking seriously about a Pro career.

Best wishes to Tyner and the Warriors tomorrow. There is going to be plenty of record talk. But more importantly this is win or go home for one of these great teams.
Here is a terrific interview we had with Cory McCaffrey last season where we talked a lot about football and the memories he has from his time in High School. From 3:00 on in this interview he talks alot about HIgh School and things the kids still in it going through the playoffs should know.

The Greatest Running back to ever play high school call in Oregon had to hang it up before he got to finish. He was the #1 Rusher in the Nation when he ruptured his Achilles tendon and ended his career. Here is a nice interview that I think was caught at a particularly good time. Remember his name because he was not only good… but he was GREAT!

For 16 games, the 5-9, 185-pound senior was arguably the greatest running back in Portland State history. In his first year at running back for the Vikings, McCaffrey carried the ball 231 times for 1,287 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2010. Through four games of the 2011 season, he was leading the nation in rushing and touchdowns.
As with Jim Brown and Barry Sanders, McCaffrey finished at the pinnacle of his trade.
"The great thing about my injury is that I went out on top," he said. "I can say that for the rest of my life. I went out leading the nation in rushing and in touchdowns. And I still have my high school records."
At Sisters High, McCaffrey became the most prolific running back in Oregon prep history. Over three years, he gained 8,460 yards — a mark that eclipses the next-best state rushing total by more than 3,000 yards.
No Division-I scholarship offers came, though, and McCaffrey chose to go to Portland State.
He found himself star-crossed throughout his time on the Park Blocks.
McCaffrey played his first two seasons under Jerry Glanville. With the Vikings using a run-and-shoot offense, McCaffrey was pigeonholed into being a receiver. In two seasons, he caught just three passes.
When Glanville was let go and Burton took over the program, McCaffrey returned to running back. His teammates dubbed him "The Great White Hope."
"You don't see too many white running backs at the college level," McCaffrey said. "I guess that's the little joke."
Playing less than a season-and-a-half at running back, McCaffrey never had time to etch his name into the Vikings' record books. He finished his career with 353 carries for 2,018 yards and 23 touchdowns. He ranks 10th all-time in rushing yards and eighth in touchdowns.
"It's a shame he didn't have another year," Burton said, "because he would've broken a lot of records here."
As he looked out over the practice field on Tuesday, McCaffrey radiated a desire to take off his cast and line up behind the quarterback in the Vikings' pistol formation.
"Man, I know that guy loved football," Kavanaugh said.
